While Joe is sleeping with Norma in exchange for a place to live and an increasing stash of luxury goods, his true romantic interests center on Betty. Unfortunately, of course, she's engaged to his good friend, Artie Green—which doesn't pose an insurmountable problem since Betty ends up falling in love with Joe. In the end Betty's interest proves to be Joe's undoing. When Norma finds out about them, her reaction sparks the chain of events that leads to Joe deciding to leave her. This, of course, results in Norma murdering him.
