Character Role Analysis

The Queen of Heaven/Christine de Pizan

The Queen of Heaven doesn't show up for very long in this book, but it's important to know that she is actually the Virgin Mary and that Christine de Pizan has chosen her to be the Queen of the City of Ladies. Through this queen, women have a direct connection to God.

Christine has felt throughout this book that God hates women and loves only men. But whenever she thinks of the Virgin Mary, she realizes that God chose to have Jesus Christ born through a woman, which means that humanity owes its holy salvation to a woman, too. So hooray for that. Chances are that Christine wasn't writing for a non-Christian audience, by the way. This is 15th Century France we're talking about, after all.
