There isn't a lot of guiding or mentoring happening in The English Patient. People are stumbling through the war the best way they know how, with varying levels of success. But Katharine mentors Almásy in the ways of love.

Okay, we know that sounds cheesy, but Almásy is cold and uncaring before he meets Katharine. She is able to crack his chilly exterior and extract his inner warmth. You've heard it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, but with Almásy and Katharine, sometimes we're not so sure. Their affair affected many people in terrible ways.
