The King's Speech Family Quotes

How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from The King's Speech.

Quote #1

LOGUE: How about Bertie?
BERTIE: Only my family uses that.

When Logue tries to call the Duke of York by the name Bertie, it makes the Duke very uncomfortable. He's used to a life where everyone greets him as "Your Majesty" or "sir." But Logue has no time for that because he needs to be treated like Bertie's family if he's going to help him.

Quote #2

GEORGE V: This family is reduced to those lowest, basest of all creatures... we've become actors!

King George V can't believe that his fancy royal family is in a position where it has to audition for the public's attention. In his mind, this marks a huge fall for the British Royal Family.

Quote #3

BERTIE: Papa, we're not a family, we're a firm.

Bertie doesn't think of his birth family as a family. They're more like a business in his mind because they don't really care about one another. They only care about how other people see them. And that's exactly why Bertie gets so nervous when he speaks. He has no one to make him feel safe.

Quote #4

GEORGE V: When I'm dead that boy will ruin himself, this family, and this nation, within twelve months.

King George V is terrified that his eldest son David will destroy the Royal Family as soon as he (George) dies. This is a big problem because family tradition dictates that David has to take the throne even if George prefers Bertie.

Quote #5

BERTIE: Nannies. Not my first nanny, though… she loved David, hated me. When I was presented to my parents for the daily viewing, she'd...

Bertie was raised by nannies instead of his mother and father. And it sounds like his first nanny did a real number on him, starving him and pinching him. This poor treatment as a child might have something to do with the stutter Bertie developed around four or five years old.

Quote #6

BERTIE: Sweet boy. Epilepsy. And he was "different." Died at thirteen, hidden from view. Too embarrassing for the family. I've been told it's not catching.

Along with his poor treatment from his nanny, Bertie was no doubt deeply affected by the death of his brother at age thirteen from epilepsy. He's scared that he might die from the same thing some day, and this stress no doubt contributes to his nervous stuttering.

Quote #7

COSMO LANG: But members of your family will be seated there, Sir.

Archbishop Cosmo Lang is astounded when Bertie asks to have a commoner like Logue seated in his family's special box for his coronation ceremony. But doing this shows us that Bertie has come to think of Logue as family, which is a massive step forward from the beginning of this movie.

Quote #8

ELIZABETH (DAUGHTER): Now Papa, tell a story!
BERTIE: Could I be a penguin instead?

Bertie feels safe around his family, but he still tries to avoid telling stories whenever he has the chance. Even around his children, he's afraid of stuttering and ruining his story.

Quote #9

BERTIE: A short-tailed Albatross. With wings big enough to wrap around both his precious girls together.

Deep down, there is nothing that brings Bertie more joy than his family. In fact, he often wishes he could spend all his time with them instead of having to go around acting like a king and giving speeches.

Quote #10

DAVID: Departing prematurely to complicate matters.

David is selfish enough to think that his father is dying on purpose to ruin his (David's) relationship with Wallis Simpson. If David becomes king, then he'll have no choice but to end his relationship. Or he could just give up the family throne, which he eventually does.
