The Maltese Falcon Scene 13 Summary

  • Spade secures the statue in a safe deposit box, then goes to find Brigid.
  • The address she gave over the phone is an empty lot. Unless Brigid is disguised as a signpost, she's not there.
  • Spade calls Effie and tells her the phone call was a fake.
  • When he gets out of his car at his apartment, Brigid runs out of the shadows.
  • She's exhausted, and Spade helps her inside.
  • But Wilmer is inside his apartment behind the door.
  • And Gutman and Cairo are waiting in the living room. The gang's all here.
  • Gutman gives Spade an envelope of $10,000 in exchange for the Falcon.
  • Spade doesn't appreciate being shortchanged, but Cairo believes that they have the upper hand, seeing that they have their guns pointed at Spade.
  • Spade says he'll give them the Falcon, but they need a fall guy to take the blame for the murders, or else the police will blame him.
  • He suggests they turn in Wilmer.
  • But Gutman thinks of Wilmer as his son. Plus, he thinks Wilmer would tell the police the truth.
  • Wilmer doesn't seem to be a fan of the idea. He wants to shoot Spade.
  • Gutman tells Wilmer to heel. If he shoots Spade, they'll never get the Falcon.
  • Spade's backup plan is to give Cairo to the police.
  • Cairo, of course, doesn't like that, and tries to talk Gutman into selling out Wilmer.
  • Wilmer advances on Spade, who punches the boy in the face. Lights out, Wilmer.
