Reynard Muldoon Timeline and Summary

  • Reynie makes his way to the Monk Building in Stonetown so he can take a test that could qualify him for some "special opportunities."
  • Reynie passes the first two tests and meets two other children, Sticky and Kate, who also made it through the first two rounds of testing.
  • Reynie, Kate, and Sticky make their way through two more stages of testing and are invited to the house of Mr. Benedict, where they learn there is a fourth child who passed the tests and will be joining them shortly.
  • When the fourth child, Constance, arrives, Reynie and the others learn that Mr. Benedict is putting together a team of children for a dangerous mission, and they all elect to join the team.
  • Reynie and the other children enroll in the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened to begin their mission for Mr. Benedict.
  • As the kids begin to explore Nomansan Island, where the Institute is based, Reynie realizes he is the de facto leader of their group and is pleasantly surprised by the fact that these other children want and value his opinion. It's a new experience for him.
  • In an assembly with other new students, Reynie comes face to face—almost nose to nose, really—with Ledroptha Curtain, who, much to Reynie's shock, appears to be Mr. Benedict.
  • Reynie and the others determine that Mr. Curtain is actually Mr. Benedict's long lost twin brother, and resolve to continue with their mission.
  • After making perfect scores on his tests and expressing disappointment at not yet having achieved Messenger status, Reynie is noticed by Mr. Curtain and invited to his office, where he sees Mr. Curtain's journal.
  • Reynie comes up with a plan to allow the kids access to Mr. Curtain's journal, and they learn more of his brainsweeping process and the capabilities of the Whisperer.
  • Reynie begins to doubt many of the choices he's recently made. Sure he's just trying to complete the team's mission, but he seems to keep getting other people in trouble—he worries that he's becoming a dangerous person to know.
  • Reynie and Sticky are made messengers and have their first session with the Whisperer.
  • Reynie and the others sneak into Mr. Curtain's "press room," where they learn more about his plan and see crates of mini-Whisperers ready to be shipped.
  • Reynie and the others decline Milligan's offer to take the kids off the island, deciding instead to stay and complete their mission.
  • Reynie and the other MBSers doctor the cafeteria food to make the other Messengers sick so Reynie and Sticky will get their next sessions with the Whisperer sooner.
  • While Sticky has his session with the Whisperer, Reynie sends a message to the mainland letting them know he needs Kate and Constance in the flag tower ASAP.
  • When he's strapped into the Whisperer for his next session, Reynie receives the reassurance he needs to resist, and he manages to hold on long enough for Constance to arrive at the flag tower and disrupt his session.
  • Reynie discovers that anger sends Mr. Curtain into a narcoleptic fit, and uses that knowledge to knock him out twice while the kids try to disable the Whisperer.
  • Reynie determines that he must get into the Whisperer again and risk being brainswept in order to disable it.
  • While Constance fights the Whisperer, Reynie guesses Mr. Curtain's password (controle) and lets Milligan into the tower.
  • With Mr. Curtain temporarily out of commission, Reynie and the others return to the mainland.
  • Reynie recognizes Mr. Benedict, posing as Mr. Curtain, on the bridge, and saves him from Milligan's tranquilizer dart.
  • Back at Mr. Benedict's house, Reynie is adopted by Miss Perumal and has a friendly snowball fight with his buddies.
