Captain Amaso Delano ("Benito Cereno") Timeline and Summary

  • Captain Amaso Delano, the captain of an American sealer, "The Bachelor's Delight", comes upon a Spanish ship in distress.
  • He brings aboard supplies, and sends his men back to his ship to get more water and food and help.
  • On the ship, he finds that many of the white Spaniards are dead; the slaves seem to be poorly controlled.
  • But Don Benito Cereno, the captain, assures him all is well; they've just had a bad passage.
  • Delano says, huh, okay.
  • He thinks something is wrong, then thinks it isn't, then thinks it is, back and forth.
  • Back and forth.
  • This goes on for a while.
  • Finally, the ship pulls up, Delano goes overboard, and Benito Cereno jumps over as well.
  • It turns out that the blacks had escaped and captured the ship; Babo, Cereno's servant, had been in control all along.
  • Delano orders the ship boarded, kills many of the black people and captures the rest.
  • Delano takes the former slaves to the authorities for trial.
