Don Benito Cereno ("Benito Cereno") Timeline and Summary

  • Don Benito's ship, the San Dominick, sails with Benito's friend Don Aranda and Aranda's slaves.
  • The slaves, led by Babo, overthrow the Spanish crew and seize control of the ship.
  • The former slaves kill many of the Spanish including Don Aranda. They demand to be sailed to an African port.
  • Don Benito stalls, and eventually after hardship they find the American ship The Bachelor's Delight off Chile.
  • Babo figures out a plan to pretend that the slaves are still slaves, so Delano will resupply them and they can be on their way again.
  • It almost works…but when Delano goes over the side leaving the ship, Benito leaps after him, freeing himself from Babo.
  • Delano's men kill or capture all the slaves.
  • Benito cannot escape his traumatized depression, however. He enters a monastery and he dies only a few months after Babo is executed.
