The Power of One Chapter 20 Summary

  • Now that Peekay's one of Sinjun's People he has a lot more work to do for his private lessons with Singe 'n' Burn, but he finds it very interesting.
  • Morrie has an idea for how Peekay can train with Solly Goldman, using their money from the bank to pay for the first year. Peekay doesn't want to use their capital, so Morrie has to think of another scam for them to get the money they need.
  • He decides to take bets on a rugby game, against the team that Geldhuis, Peekay's first school boxing opponent, plays for. Even though the Prince of Wales School's team has lost the past four games to them, they are getting better, and Morrie thinks he can influence the teams psychologically to make the odds go in his favor.
  • He takes Peekay with him to the other school to meet Geldenhuis, and Morrie says that he'll take three to one odds that Prince of Wales School would win, which is nuts given the track record. Geldenhuis makes them sign a guarantee that they'll pay up their debts if they lose, and they agree. Morrie offers to give Geldenhuis twenty percent of the winnings or fifty pounds now, and he goes for the sure deal even though he could win a lot more with the percentage.
  • Then Geldenhuis pulls a real jerky move and says that he'll only set up his school's bets if he deals with Peekay only, not with the "Jewboy" Morrie. Peekay gets mad and starts to defend his friend, but Morrie lets it go. Then he says that his condition is a boxing rematch with Peekay, right here, right now.
  • Morrie sort of saw this coming, knowing human nature like he does, and bets the fifty pounds he just gave Geldenhuis that Peekay will win.
  • Geldenhuis lends Peekay some clothes, gloves, and shoes, and he heads to the ring, where almost the whole school is waiting and cheering.
  • Peekay has beaten Geldenhuis their last five meet-ups, and Geldenhuis means business. Peekay gives him an eight-punch combo in the gut in the first round, but Geldenhuis boxes better than him in the second. Finally, in the final round Peekay gets aggressive and also takes Geldenhuis down in his first-ever knockout.
  • This is all part of Morrie's master plan to take the wind out of the other school's sails for the rugby match, and it's working.
  • The Prince of Wales School boys also aren't too loyal and bet against their team. You can't really blame them, given their track record. But if they can win, this will make Morrie and Peekay rich through the bets and they'll have enough to pay the boxing trainer.
  • Sure enough, the Prince of Wales School upsets the other team and the boys get what they need to work with Solly Goldman.
  • Solly usually only trains pros, but agrees to take on Peekay because he's so good. And he gets even better with Solly's training.
  • When Peekay goes home for Christmas, Gert the prison guard picks him up and tells him that Doc isn't in such good shape, that he'd been in the hospital with pneumonia, which really worries Peekay. He goes straight to Doc's place and hugs him, crying, begging him not to die. He and Doc take some walks, and Doc seems to be getting better by the time Peekay heads back to school.
