  • While on an expedition with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, Hugh Glass is attacked by a bear. He kills it but nearly dies himself.
  • Two men, Fitzgerald and Bridger, are tasked with waiting behind with Glass while he dies, but they abandon him and steal all of his stuff after a hostile tribe appears in the area.
  • Glass regains consciousness. Obsessed with getting revenge on the men who abandoned him, he crawls toward Fort Brazeau to resupply.
  • Glass eats small animals and plants before fighting a pack of wolves to get a buffalo carcass. He feels rejuvenated after this large meal.
  • Glass meets Yellow Horse, a Sioux warrior. Yellow Horse takes Glass to a medicine man who heals his infected wounds, after which Yellow Horse escorts Glass to Fort Brazeau.
  • At the fort, Glass meets Kiowa Brazeau, a French trader and the fort's owner. Kiowa suggests that Glass travel north with a group of voyageurs to make the trip easier, and Glass agrees.
  • The group is attacked by Arikara warriors, and Glass finds himself alone once again.
  • Glass makes his way to Fort Union, where the Rocky Mountain Fur Company was supposed to be, but it's empty. Glass realizes everyone went to Fort Manuel, so he heads there.
  • Upon arriving at Fort Manuel, Glass sees Bridger and starts beating him. When he looks down, however, he sees the resignation in Bridger's eyes and chooses to forgive him.
  • Glass learns that Fitzgerald had deserted the company and is at Fort Atkinson.
  • Glass heads to Fort Atkinson with a group and, although they are again attacked by the Arikara, Glass makes it to the fort.
  • There, Glass learns that Fitzgerald is now in the army. The two will need to settle their dispute through a military court.
  • After it becomes clear that Fitzgerald is going to win the case, Glass shoots him in the shoulder. Glass is locked in jail.
  • Glass is bailed out by Kiowa, who begs him to give up on his revenge quest.
