Character Role Analysis

World War I

Yeah, that's right: We put a question mark after World War I. Because, honestly, we're just not sure who gets in our protagonist's way in this story. Is it the "Whites in Budapest" who tormented him and prompted his trip? Is it the general chaos the war has left in its wake (hence the torment by the Whites)? Is it whoever captures the comrade and throws him in jail (also thanks to the war)? It seems like plenty stands in the comrade's way, but we never actually see any of it unfold. We can, however, trace it all back to the stinking war. So yeah, we're blaming the war.

But feel free to disagree with us.
