Thomas Timeline & Summary

  • Thomas wakes up in a place called the Dormitories.
  • Thomas has been having a pretty crazy few weeks running through mazes and such. Luckily, it seems like a bunch of rebels saved him and his friends from a group called WICKED.
  • But everything is not what it seems: Thomas hears people screaming outside, and he looks out a window to see a diseased-ridden crazy dude with burned skin calling himself a Crank.
  • Thomas freaks out (because who wouldn't?) and runs to Teresa's room. On the way to her room, he runs into a bunch of dead bodies hanging from the ceiling in the corridor.
  • When Thomas makes it to her room, Teresa's gone.
  • There's a kid named Aris in Teresa's room instead.
  • There's also a random dude sitting in a chair in the corridor reading a book.
  • One more thing: the dead bodies are suddenly gone. What's going on here? Thomas is confused.
  • The boys all wait it out until the man starts speaking. He tells them he's from WICKED, then he gives them the Scorch Trials task.
  • At 6:00AM, the boys wake up and travel through the Flat Trans, which is a transportation device.
  • Thomas sees two Gladers get their heads knocked off by metal balls; then he helps Winston get a grey blob of who-knows-what off of his head. What a day.
  • When they finally exit the Flat Trans, the Gladers enter the Scorch. It's pretty hot out there.
  • The Gladers reach the city and find a bunch of Cranks. Minho ticks off their leader, Jorge, and Thomas is forced to negotiate with Jorge so that he won't kill all of the boys.
  • Thomas and Jorge reach an agreement. Jorge will help the Gladers get to the safe haven. He brings along a girl named Brenda, another Crank.
  • On the way to the mountains (en route to the safe haven), Thomas and Brenda get separated from the rest of the pack.
  • Brenda leads Thomas through an underground tunnel system. Along the way, they get attacked by really crazy Cranks, but they end up making it out eventually.
  • When Thomas and Brenda get out of the tunnel system, Thomas notices that there are signs everywhere that say Thomas is the real leader of the Gladers. Hmm, that's odd.
  • Apparently, these signs are everywhere.
  • Brenda and Thomas hear a noise, so they investigate: it's a bunch of semi-crazy Cranks having a party.
  • Thomas and Brenda begin to walk away when they're pretty much kidnapped by three Cranks who are going to the party. One Crank has a gun.
  • At the party, Brenda and Thomas get drugged. When they wake up, they're interrogated for a little bit, but Minho and the Gladers ambush the party and save them.
  • The Crank with the pistol escapes the ambush and shoots Thomas in the shoulder. Ouch.
  • Apparently, Thomas wasn't supposed to get shot: he's promptly taken away by a flying saucer thing called a Berg, and his damaged shoulder is repaired. The people in the Berg: WICKED.
  • When he gets back to the Scorch, Thomas feels better. But the group needs to keep moving toward the safe haven.
  • When they reach the mountains, the Gladers are stopped by Group B, which is led by Teresa.
  • Oh, how the tables have turned.
  • Teresa is seriously angry at Thomas for some reason, and Group B takes him away.
  • Along the way, Teresa bops Thomas on the head a few times for good measure. Now he's not feeling too hot anymore.
  • Being the crafty dude he is, Thomas talks the Group B girls into letting him go while Teresa is gone.
  • So, now Thomas is allied with Group B (minus Teresa), and they're all heading toward the safe haven. Right as they're about to reach it, Thomas sees Teresa, and she beckons him to follow her.
  • Don't do it, Thomas.
  • Thomas follows.
  • Bad idea: Teresa leads Thomas to a cave, where Aris suddenly appears. Teresa and Aris have apparently been working together.
  • Thomas fails to escape from Teresa and Aris, and they put him in dark room, where he's gassed.
  • But Thomas doesn't die, and when he wakes up, he actually feels better—but super betrayed.
  • Teresa rushes in to apologize. She claims WICKED made her betray Thomas so that he would feel betrayed. All she knows is that WICKED would have killed him if she hadn't done what she did.
  • This all makes sense, but Thomas is still pretty sour. Okay, really sour. Like, Sour Patch Kids sour.
  • Anyway, time is running out to get to the safe haven, so whether he believes her or not, Thomas is forced to follow Teresa.
  • Thomas, Teresa, and Aris meet up with Groups A and B, who have reached the safe haven.
  • The safe haven, unfortunately, is a stick in the ground that says "The Safe Haven." Ugh.
  • Just to make matters worse, the sky gets all stormy, and coffin-like containers appear in the sky. Inside are monsters that attack the Gladers.
  • Thomas takes on a monster by himself, and he ends up defeating it. Each monster has a bunch of lightbulb-looking growths on its skin, so Thomas just pops all of his monster's to kill it.
  • Then a Berg shows up—that must be the safe haven.
  • Everyone but one boy and one girl (who died fighting the monsters) grab on to the Berg.
  • Thomas feels safe, when all the sudden a guy from WICKED shows up.
  • This dude from WICKED is super mad because Brenda and Jorge made it onto the Berg. They aren't Gladers; they're just random Cranks.
  • The man tells Thomas to pick one Crank—either Jorge or Brenda—to survive, so Thomas picks Jorge, thinking that the man will then kill Jorge. You know, this is all reverse psychology.
  • But as the man starts to actually take Brenda away, Thomas attacks him. He kicks the guy to the ground and demands that no one die.
  • Hmm, fair enough. The man agrees but tells the Gladers to follow him. And since they really have no choice, the Gladers follow.
  • The Gladers reach another dormitory area, where they're given food. Everyone's mad sleepy, so they all finally get some rest.
  • But, of course, Thomas encounters yet another obstacle: when he wakes up, he's alone in a white room.
  • Teresa tries to talk to Thomas telepathically: he's been gone for a whole week, and WICKED says he's very sick with the Flare.
  • Thomas gets fed up with Teresa and tells her to stop talking to him. She reluctantly agrees, but then gives him one last piece of advice: WICKED is good.
