Usually, having a mentor is a good thing: someone older and wiser, guiding a person through life. But Sutter's mentor and idol is his dad, an alcoholic who dropped off the face of the earth after cheating his wife. Sutter has looked up to him all his life, cherishing everything he knows about him: the drinking, the Jimmy Buffett songs, even the house they lived in.

So when he finally does see him again, and finds out how awful he is, what does he do? He follows in his footsteps.
