Character Role Analysis

Meursault

This is Meursault’s story, as told through Meursault’s eyes, heart, and mind (but more mind than eyes, and more eyes than heart... dude's heart is definitely two sizes two small). He is the definitely our protagonist.

Of course, Meursault doesn’t exactly encompass traditional protagonist qualities, such as not being hated by everyone. Meursault can be called an anti-hero, a main character who embodies the opposite of the qualities of traditional heroes like bravery, determination, and a strong sense of personal identity.

Is Meursault brave and determined? Not so much. But you could argue he earns his hero stripes at the end of the novel, when he realizes he knows "for certain" all about his life, his impending death, and what is waiting for him.
