Daniel Jae Ho Bae Timeline & Summary

  • Daniel gets ready for his interview with Yale while thinking about how his mean brother Charlie got kicked out of Harvard.
  • Daniel's mom gives him three tasks: 1) Bring some deposit slips to your dad at work, 2) Get a haircut before your interview, 3) Don't be like your mean brother Charlie who got kicked out of Harvard.
  • Daniel agrees to all three and hops on a train.
  • He's treated to an evangelical mini-sermon from the conductor, who encourages the passengers to find God.
  • Daniel climbs the steps of a church and discovers a locked door...but then he turns around and sees a cute girl listening to some music.
  • She's headed the same way he is, so when she ducks into a place called "Second Coming Records," he takes it as A Sign and follows her inside.
  • Daniel stops a young couple from stealing from this small business—and the dude in the couple happens to be the cute girl's ex. They banter for a minute, but then she has to leave poor smitten Daniel behind.
  • They're still both heading in the same direction, so Daniel's trying to trail her without being a creep.
  • He sees a drunk driver about to hit Girl With No Name and yanks her out of the street, saving her life.
  • She introduces herself as Natasha, and Daniel offers to buy her coffee.
  • He's having major visions of them growing old together, and is practically planning their wedding in his head, but Natasha's having none of it. She says she doesn't even believe in love.
  • Daniel bets he can ask her 36 love-inducing personal questions that will change her mind scientifically.
  • They get to know each other while walking to some mysterious appointment Natasha has, but then they agree it just makes sense to part ways…
  • ...or not. Daniel reschedules his interview and waits in the lobby of Natasha's building.
  • Natasha is excited to see Daniel, but concerned he's derailing his future. He says he knows she's worth it, and then he realizes he needs to go drop off those deposit slips.
  • He and Natasha continue their love questionnaire while on a train to his family's Black Hair Care store.
  • Daniel's mean brother and his trying-hard-not-to-be-racist dad completely embarrass him.
  • Daniel's mortified, but Natasha takes it in stride.
  • Daniel brings her to his favorite Korean restaurant and then to the norebang (Korean karaoke bar) next door.
  • Daniel chooses an ABBA song and hams it up during his Broadway-esque performance, while Natasha totally bombs her depressing song choice, but she's having too much fun to be self-conscious about her awful vocals.
  • Their hormones are flying, and they start making out. Daniel has a hard time not wanting to go even further, and he's more convinced than ever that he and Natasha are meant to be.
  • His proclamations about fate freak Natasha out, and she tells him she's being deported. Tonight.
  • Well, that's one way to kill a mood. Daniel is stunned.
  • He and Natasha get into a huge fight and both storm off.
  • Still fuming, Daniel's itching to punch somebody, and his Mean Brother Charlie Who Got Kicked Out of Harvard (We're trademarking that phrase) seems like a great contender.
  • He storms back to his family's shop and asks his MBCWGKOOH (see above) why he's always so mean to him. Charlie says Daniel's pathetic for embracing their Korean heritage, and Daniel says maybe Charlie's pathetic for not being such a hotshot at Harvard.
  • They start trading blows, and then their dad walks in and demands to know what's going on. Daniel's dad lectures him about his silly dreams. If Daniel doesn't want to take the most practical path to success, he's welcome to move out and finance his own future. Harsh.
  • Daniel leaves the family's store with no plan except to find Natasha, but internet-stalking when you only know somebody's first name is pretty difficult. He decides to go back to her attorney's office and wait.
  • Suddenly, his phone rings. It's Natasha! She convinced Charlie to give him her number, and she's relieved to hear Daniel's been looking for her, too.
  • Our two lovebirds reunite and apologize to each other.
  • Coincidentally, Daniel's alumni interview is also in this building, so they have more free time together—potentially a lot more, since Natasha's lawyer thinks he'll be able to delay her deportation.
  • They go up to the building's roof, make out some more, and continue their love questionnaire.
  • Daniel heads to his alumni interview, which just so happens to not only be in the same building as Natasha's attorney's office, but with her attorney.
  • Daniel spots her case file on Attorney Fitzgerald's desk and thanks him for helping Natasha—he just met her today but he knows she's The One.
  • Attorney Fitzgerald skeptically asks him if he even wants to go to Yale, and Daniel says he doesn't know, but he'll go just because his parents want him to.
  • Fitzgerald tells him he should make his mistakes now, and then breaks the news to Daniel that he wasn't able to stop Natasha's deportation after all.
  • Daniel is heartbroken.
  • Fitzgerald tells him Yale could open a lot of doors for him, but Daniel accurately points out that Fitzgerald did everything he was supposed to do, and he's still not happy.
  • Daniel just wants to spend every second possible with Natasha, and he breaks the news about the deportation himself.
  • They're both super sad, and Daniel accompanies Natasha home to help her pack. They continue their love questionnaire just to keep their minds occupied from this depressing turn of events.
  • Daniel meets Natasha's family and awkwardly stands by while Natasha gets in a big argument with her dad. Ultimately, the Kingsleys share a family hug, but Natasha hugs Daniel first.
  • Daniel and Natasha continue their questionnaire on the way to the airport, including the final task of staring into each other's eyes for four minutes.
  • It's gut-wrenching, and when it's over, Natasha tells Daniel she loves him.
  • Daniel tries to watch her plane take off.
  • Daniel and Natasha try to stay in touch, but being separated by an ocean is just too hard, and they drift apart.
  • Ultimately, Daniel moves out of his parents' house and does end up putting himself through school at Hunter College.
  • He studies English and writes sad poems about Natasha.
  • Ten years after his life-changing day, Daniel is on a plane—to where, we're not sure.
  • In any case, he overhears the flight attendant talking to a cute young woman in the row in front of him.
  • The flight attendant apparently used to be a security guard at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services building in New York City. She remembers meeting the young woman 10 years ago and hopes she remembers her, too.
  • She does. Her name is Natasha. (Cue internal freakout.)
  • Daniel stands up and says, "Natasha." She turns around, sees him, and all's right with the world.
