Nature

The antagonist in this story is clearly nature, which seems to use every opportunity available to kill the poor guy. Does anyone remember any of those Final Destination movies, in which Death comes after people by setting a bunch of complicated booby traps? That's what nature seems to be doing here. It makes the man's feet wet, blows cold wind in his face, and dumps snow onto his fire. If only the narrator weren't so clear on the fact that nature isn't a cruel enemy, but just a vacuum of indifference.
