From the Preface we knew that there was going to be some life-and-death business going down in Twilight, but little did we know how often Bella's life would be in danger. Whenever Edward is present, she's in danger (in theory). Tyler almost hits Bella with his truck, and then some thugs attempt to attack her in an alley in Port Angeles. Eventually James enters the story and it's only a matter of time before Bella becomes his next victim. In the end, Bella is actually willing to give up her mortal life that Edward's been fighting so hard to save – if and only if he'll transform her into a vampire. Meanwhile, the vampires are all immortal.
Questions About Mortality
- Why does Bella want to become a vampire?
- Should Edward have saved Bella each of the three times? Do you agree that Bella's "number was up" (8.214) the first time Edward met her?
- Can you think of any downsides to being immortal? Do you think any vampires might resent being transformed from human to vampire, even if their human life might have ended?
- Why do you think Bella's life is constantly in danger before she even starts a relationship with Edward?
