Morality & Ethics Quotes in Unwind

How we cite our quotes: (Part.Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote #1

He knows AWOL Unwinds will not give up as long as there's an ounce of consciousness left in them. They are high on adrenaline, and often high on illegal substances as well. Nicotine, caffeine, or worse. He wishes his bullets were the real thing. He wishes he could truly take these wastes-of-life out rather than just taking them down. (1.5.1)

This guy and his skewed sense of the world should not be a cop. He actually thinks later on, "he sometimes wishes he didn't have such moral integrity." The self-righteous ones are even worse.

Quote #2

The Bill of Life was supposed to protect the sanctity of life. Instead it just made life cheap. (2.9.5)

If this is true, why is nothing being done to repeal it?

Quote #3

How wonderful is it that she can dismiss her responsibility so easily. (2.9.12)

We often get commentary like this in the chapter about the mother leaving her baby on a doorstep. Do you agree that what she's doing is dismissing her responsibility? What other choices does she have?

Quote #4

"The next morning, before the rest of us got up, my dad put the baby on a doorstep across the street." (2.14.37)

Why is this considered horrific, but it's legal for a mother to do the same thing to her own baby? Morality is super muddled in this world.

Quote #5

"People shouldn't give away babies that get left at their door," Lev finally says.

"People shouldn't stork their babies," Risa responds.

"People shouldn't do a lot of things," says Connor. (2.14.54-56)

Connor pretty much sums everything up best. There are no universal morals or ethics (or are there?) and it's impossible to make foolproof laws to regulate them.

Quote #6

Doing the right thing shouldn't make you ashamed. (2.15.16)

This might be the best way to gauge if something is ethical or moral…or to figure out if you're a sociopath.

Quote #7

"You ain't gotta be eatin' other folks' garbage, foo'!" (3.21.14)

Not all the issues addressed in this book are pro-life or pro-choice. Some of them boil down to whether or not it's acceptable to be eating out of the trash. Cy-Fi says no. He convinces people to give him food, like he's Amanda Palmer or something.

Quote #8

"That's right—but you helped me. Now it's my turn to do the same for you. And I'm going to get you to Joplin." (3.21.191)

Here's a strange bit of honor coming from borderline-psychopath-suicide-bomber Lev. If we have one positive thing to say about him (and we might only have one positive thing) it's that he's true to his word.

Quote #9

"I don't think unwinding is bad," [Emby] says. "I just don't want it to happen to me." (4.27.63)

The double standard here is striking. Emby had no problem receiving an Unwind's lung to live. Is that hypocritical of him?

Quote #10

"I'd rather die than get a piece of an Unwind!" Connor yells back. (4.27.85)

In contrast to the previous quote about Emby, Connor doesn't maintain a double standard. He doesn't want to be unwound, and he won't take organs from one either.
