The Wee Free Men Courage Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote #1

It seemed to Tiffany that although the owners of the three voices were fighting things that couldn't possibly fight back, including a teddy bear with only one leg, the fight still wasn't going all one way. (3.70)

The Nac Mac Feegles love to fight anything and everything, even if it's just a teddy bear missing a leg. They really aren't very discriminatory when it comes to looking for people or things to fight, are they?

Quote #2

Tiffany almost felt sorry for it as it whined in pain, but the snow was creeping toward her and she hit the dog with the frying pan. It went down heavily and lay still. (5.121)

Even though she's just a nine-year-old girl armed with a frying pan, Tiffany will willingly go into battle against creatures she's never even seen before. Come at her, bro.

Quote #3

Tiffany gripped the handle of her pan. The dogs weren't barking. It would have been slightly less scary if they were. (8.26)

Courage isn't charging into a situation that doesn't scare you at all. Courage involves going into a situation and standing your ground… even when you're terrified.

Quote #4

She felt the fear grow, she felt her stomach become a red hot lump, she felt her elbows begin to sweat. But it was… not connected. She watched herself being frightened, and that meant that there was still this part of herself, the watching part, that wasn't. (8.102)

Tiffany may be scared, but she's still self-aware enough to keep herself removed from her fear. She won't let it take her over because she needs her senses intact to act and react.

Quote #5

Tiffany grabbed the pan and swung it as she rolled onto her feet. It hit the tall figure only a glancing blow, but the Queen wavered like air over a hot road, and screamed. (10.221)

Most kids (like Roland) would be terrified of angering the Queen, but Tiffany isn't—she's going to keep swinging at her with the frying pan and taunting her in order to get what she wants. It doesn't matter if the Queen comes after her for vengeance.

Quote #6

"Nightmares," repeated Rob Anybody, turning to her. "Ye wouldna want to know about them. We'll hold 'em off. Ye must mak' a run for it. Get awa' wi' ye, noo!" (11.100)

Those brave little Wee Free Men. Even when literal nightmares are bearing down on them, they just draw their swords and prepare for battle. It's quite impressive.

Quote #7

She could put up with monsters. But she didn't want to face mad boots. (11.113)

Tiffany may be ready to face lots of scary monsters and dromes, but apparently she draws the line at angry footwear. Who knew?

Quote #8

There's always been someone watching the borders. They didn't decide to. It was decided for them. Someone has to care. Sometimes they have to fight. Sometimes they have to speak for that which has no voice… (13.60)

Even if she's not ready for it, Tiffany has to protect the borders of their world. It's her duty and she's going to have to do it like Granny Aching did, or else really bad things could get in.

Quote #9

I'll never be like this again, she thought, as she saw the terror in the Queen's face. I'll never again feel as tall as the sky and as old as the hills and as strong as the sea. (13.153)

After she knows that Granny Aching is watching her, Tiffany gets a surge of courage and confidence—she just knows that she can defeat the Queen. It is this same confidence that terrifies the Queen.

Quote #10

"I don't ask you your business," said Tiffany, before she even realized she was going to say it. Miss Tick gasped. Mrs. Ogg's eyes twinkled, and she looked from Tiffany to Mistress Weatherfax like someone watching a tennis match. (14.98)

Now that she's beat an evil queen, Tiffany isn't going to let anyone talk down to her—not even one of the most powerful witches. She's going to state her cause and stand her ground. She deserves it.
