Dorothy (Judy Garland)’s Timeline and Summary

  • Dorothy and Toto run away from Miss Gulch's place after Miss Gulch bonks Toto for chasing her cats.
  • She runs away from home after Miss Gulch tries to kill Toto, then thinks better of it with some gentle prodding from Professor Marvel.
  • She arrives back home just in time to take the Cyclone Express to Oz, earning a pair of ruby slippers and the Munchkins' undying gratitude along the way.
  • Off down the Yellow Brick Road, pausing to pick up some good buddies! First up: The Scarecrow, stuck on a pole and yearning for brains that he doesn't think he has.
  • After inadvertently offending some living apple trees, she finds Good Buddy #2, the Tin Man, rusting in the woods.
  • A little oil sends him bursting into song, and gives her another solid friend to dance down the road with.
  • The Cowardly Lion arrives and she knocks some sense into him while protecting Toto. He's initiated into the club as well.
  • The Wicked Witch throws up a roadblock with some poisonous poppies. It's off to Enchanted Dreamland for Dorothy.
  • Glinda's magic snow wakes her up and she continues to the Emerald City with the gang.
  • At the E.C., the Wizard wants her to get the Witch's broomstick before he helps her.
  • She heads off to the haunted forest with her friends, only to get a free ride from some scary flying monkeys straight back to Wicked Witch of the West.
  • Face to face with the WWW, Dorothy offers to give up her ruby slippers in exchange for Toto's life.
  • The slippers won't come off, leading the Witch to sic her magic hourglass on Dorothy. (Luckily, Toto escapes to fetch the cavalry.)
  • She sees Aunt Em in the Witch's crystal ball, which turns out to be just another form of torment from the Witch.
  • The cavalry arrives! They stop the death hourglass and whisk Dorothy out of the castle.
  • Check that. The Witch seals them in before they can escape.
  • The judicious application of water ends her Wicked Witch troubles and earns her the old bat's broomstick as a reward.
  • She takes it back to the Wizard, who promptly starts waffling.
  • She gets extremely angry at the man revealed by Toto to behind the curtain, but because she's a softhearted gal, she forgives him for that whole murder-by-proxy thing.
  • Unfortunately, he can't hold up his end of the deal, leaving her stranded in Oz while he floats off in a balloon.
  • A handy life-hack by Glinda gives her access to the magic shoes, which she clicks together three times to return home.
  • She's awfully glad to be back, even though everyone thinks it was all a concussion dream
