Shaka's dad eventually starts a new relationship. We don't hear too much about his stepmother, but she seems to be part of welcoming Shaka into the home she and his dad share, and apparently she's a great cook. (11.7, 11.11-11.12)
However, she and Shaka's dad separate before Shaka is incarcerated, (11.35) but we later hear that his stepmom visits Shaka in prison (16.21) with his dad, so it sounds like maybe they got back together (though the book doesn't say explicitly whether they did or Shaka's dad found a different relationship).
