SUNY Cortland

About Me

Intro

If you're looking for a college that offers a little bit of everything, I'm your guy—er, school. Whoever you are, whatever you want to be, and whatever you like to do, you'll find a place here at C-State. Although I'm known for my great education and sports programs, I offer a diverse selection of majors, from Speech Pathology to Criminology.

For those of you looking for more than just academics, I've got plenty of extracurriculars to keep you busy. I even have three levels of sports, so there's something for everyone. Real athletes can play for the school team or join a club sport, while those of you who prefer to laugh your way through a game might opt to join an intramural team.

There are also tons of student clubs, and that (very specific) number is constantly growing as students create their own clubs. Don't underestimate downtown Cortland, either. It may be small by most standards, but the bar scene is certainly not lacking. Take a walk and you'll be surrounded by all kinds of clubs, restaurants, and other jazzy joints to let loose.

Name

The C-State Red Dragons. My mascot? Blaze, the Red Dragon, of course.

Hometown

Cortland, New York: The sweet spot between Syracuse (the land of basketball and snow) and Ithaca (the land of greenery and tea…and probably green tea, too).

Birthdate

I was founded in 1868 as the "Cortland Normal School." Yep, my study body was referred to as "the Normals." Let's just say my new name suits me a bit better.

Body Type

I'm not too big, but not too small either: I have about 6,000 undergrads and 1,000 grads. There are enough folks around for you to find diverse personalities and activities around campus, but you won't get swallowed up in the crowd. Basically, you can run for office in a club or apply for a job on campus and actually get it. Cortland isn't Manhattan—you have a voice here.

Current Living Situation

Freshmen are required to live on campus for four semesters, but don't fret; living on campus is a great way to get to know other students. Plus, you'll be super close to all of the important things, i.e. food and your classes.

There are a bunch of living options for you picky choosers out there. I've got high- and low-rise residence halls, double rooms, suites, and even specialty housing like the International dorm. Don't want to spend any money on housing? Apply to be a Residence Life staff member (from your sophomore year on) and get your room paid for, plus a stipend. Cha-ching.

After your first four semesters, you have the choice to stay on campus in a residence hall, move to West Campus Apartments (an off-campus housing development owned by the college), or move off campus. There are lots of student housing options available within walking distance to campus, from single apartments to huge houses for you and your twenty closest friends.

Relationship Status

I have this little—ahem—rivalry with Ithaca College. More on that later.

Religion

Although I'm not affiliated with one particular religion, you'll find plenty of opportunities to get your church on here. I offer everything from a Sunday mass on top of the hill to the Jewish club, Hillel, as well as a traveling Gospel Choir.

Politics

You'll find all kinds of politics here, but keep in mind that this is New York and you are going to college. If I had to paint the campus one color, it would be blue.

You should apply to me if...

you're thinking of changing the world one YOLO-youth at a time (a.k.a. teaching), you enjoy athletics, or you like snow. A lot.
