What do Batman and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow author Washington Irving, who was born on this day in 1783, have in common? In a word, Gotham. Irving first dubbed New York City "Gotham"—which means "goat's town"—in 1807. The Dark Knight began patrolling it in 1939. (In between, we suppose the goats were on their own.)
