The 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on this day in 1933, bumping up inauguration day from March to January. Why is that important? Because it shortened the "lame duck" period, the stretch of time where the new president has already been elected, and the old president knows they're on their way out, so they just sit around the Oval Office in their pajamas playing Xbox and refusing to do any actual work.
