jun 24 Learn More Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Repealed


On this day in 1970, the U.S. Senate repealed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. So why'd they take it back? Because it let President Lyndon B. Johnson go to war in Vietnam without the usual, formal declaration of war. In other words, as the philosopher Mystikal once said, "Danger! Watch yourself!" Plus, by the time of the repeal, the Vietnam War was about as popular with the American public as pet rocks and Tranz Am are today. So, out with the Gulf of Tonkin, and in with the War Powers Resolution, which reestablished limits on the president's ability to go to war.
