Confederate General Robert E. Lee died on this day in 1870. After the Civil War ended, he became the president of Washington and Lee University, and he was buried beneath the chapel there—without his shoes. Due to unparalleled rain and flooding, the only available coffin that wasn't damaged was just a tiny bit too short for Lee's frame.
