University of California--Riverside

About Me

Intro

If you're into a deep sense of belonging, come hang out with me. I love everyone. It doesn't matter where you come from or what you do, I've got a crowd for you. I'm the third most ethnically diverse university in the nation and I've got loads of grants for students who can't quite stretch the dough far enough to go elsewhere.

I also boast a strong LGBT community. I was the first UC to offer a program in LGBT studies and the first in the nation to offer gender-neutral housing. That's right, I accept everyone.

Don't worry, though—diversity isn't all I've got to offer. I have a multitude of exciting majors, like business, psychology, dance, and those in the natural sciences.

And who could forget about my block parties and concerts? Every Wednesday, I have a free concert just so students can hang out and kick back. I've got that community vibe happening all day, every day.

Name

Scotty the Bear. I'm Scottish because the mountains behind me are sometimes called the Highlands. I can be seen wearing a kilt. The students even call themselves "highlanders."

Hometown

Riverside, California…and no, it's nowhere near a river.

Birthdate

1954. But I was allowed to grow oranges before that, way back in 1907.

Body Type

I've got 21,000 students on campus and they are a varied bunch. That's part of my street cred. I'm known around the block as one of the most ethnically diverse colleges in the country.

Current Living Situation

On-campus dorms and apartments are standard around here. You can live it up in style in Pentland suites—they've got two showers for every four rooms, plus a community area for partyin' down.

Or, you can head on over to Aberdeen-Inverness for your typically cramped and action-packed dormitory experience. If you like to enjoy more independence, I've also got apartment living just around the corner, where you can walk or take the shuttle to class.

Relationship Status

I have nine brothers and sisters in the UC system. We all have the same academic goals, but we each have our own spin. I'm the typical middle child of the bunch.

Sometimes I'm forgotten, but I'm as steady as they come. I might compete for students with more prestigious counterparts (I'm looking at you, Berkeley), but we all share our books at the end of the day. I get along with everybody. What can I say, I'm a nice guy.

Politics

Yep, I'm pretty liberal, being from California and all. But I don't stand out as especially liberal or anything. In fact, UC Berkeley is way more liberal than I am.

You should apply to me if...

you love working hard, playing hard, oranges, and Tartan.
