These bar thingies are absolute value signs.
And we know this is a negative sign.
This here is a decimal -- often pronounced "point." In... "American," anyway
So we read the problem as "the absolute value of negative six point two three."
And as in all absolute value problems, it is only measuring how far the point is from the origin.
This thing. Number line.
It's always a positive number, so in this case, its 6.23 units
to the right from 0 on the Number Line...
...and the answer is E.
As in, "Eh."
