Safety at Home

00:05

a la Shmoop

00:06

It's chow time and you're craving a good, old-fashioned PB&J. [boy imagining and craving for an old fashioned PB and J]

00:10

You find everything you need to assemble your masterpiece

00:13

except for a knife.

00:14

And as much as you're okay with using your finger

00:16

to scoop out the peanut butter,

00:18

your mom got mad at you last time you did that.

00:20

Or the last 12 times you've done that. [mother getting angry at the boy for using finger to scoop peanut butter]

00:22

Anyway, it looks like all the clean butter knives

00:24

are in the dishwasher

00:25

and it'd take way too much effort

00:27

to wash one by hand, right?

00:29

And the sooner this PB&J gets into your mouth, well, the better.

00:32

So you grab the knife block your mom keeps in a high cabinet - [boy looking for a knife in the high cabinet]

00:35

can't have your little sister getting into it -

00:37

and pull out a butcher knife.

00:38

Yep, that'll do the trick.

00:40

And voila, it's a work of art.

00:42

And all works of art should be rewarded with

00:44

a Lord of the Rings marathon, right? [image of Pablo Picasso dressed in a suit and a hat]

00:46

Right. You'll do the dishes later.

00:48

Right now, you and [ whispered ] your precious

00:51

have some movies to watch.

00:52

While you're making your way through The Two Towers,

00:55

your little sister is making her way

00:57

through the kitchen. And guess what? [a little girl going to the kitchen]

00:59

Three-year-olds are drawn to shiny things.

01:02

You know what's shiny?

01:03

Bingo.

01:04

Looks like the king won't be returning anytime soon.

01:08

Well, you might be smart enough to not play with a knife,

01:11

but you're not the only person in your house.

01:14

Dangerous things can and do happen, [girl in the hospital with a plaster in her hand]

01:16

whether it's your little sister playing with a knife,

01:18

your grandpa tripping on all that junk you left on the floor,

01:23

your brother wondering if this is candy,

01:26

or this guy thanking you for his brand new TV. [man taking the TV away]

01:30

And when the answer is as simple as putting your junk away

01:33

or locking your front door, well,

01:35

you might as well do it and save yourself

01:37

a lot of trouble or heartbreak.

01:39

That PB&J will wait for you. [boy visiting his sister at the hospital]

01:42

[ snore ]
