In short... it's testing our number sense.
Let's start with a positive number.
The easiest number to choose is 1.
Multiply 1 by itself 4 times... and we get 1.
Now let's try a negative number.
We're going to be insanely creative and pick... negative 1.
Multiply it by itself 4 times and we get...
-1 times -1... that's positive 1. Times -1 is negative 1. Times -1 again is positive 1.
Now we know that both the positive and negative cases will give us a positive answer.
We've only got one number left to try. Multiply by 0.
0 by 0 by 0 by 0... it's just 0
Never going to be anything different.
When we tested these three cases, we saw that
the only possible outcomes were a positive number or 0.
The answer is B. As in, "Boo."
