Fame

No one joins the Coast Guard to become a celebrity. Chances are you personally won't be pointed out in headline news for all the saves that you make (or any of them, for that matter). Sometimes the Coast Guard itself will get the credit—you might show up in a local paper as a hero—but it really will be up to your parents to spread the word about your monumentally brave, heroic rescues. 

If you're really great at your job, your profile will rise within the ranks of the Guard itself, allowing for promotions and awards out the wazoo.
