Odds of Hanging On

Print publications are fading a bit, but crosswords have a strong online presence. Many print outlets are finding success in a digital medium by offering subscriptions which can be solved online or printed at home (source). Surprisingly or perhaps, not so surprisingly, many crossword solvers still prefer an old fashioned pencil, or even a pen (if they're really hard-core).

There are some concerns that younger generations aren't jumping on the crossword bandwagon. This is one reason why Shortz, Quigley, and others are pushing to limit old-school, dated "crosswordese" in favor of contemporary clues which are more relevant to the twenty-first century (source). On the whole, the industry is very welcoming to aspiring constructors, regardless of age. And since you do the work on your own time, you don't have to worry about a pink slip.
