If you're great, you'll be recognized for your work. Maybe not on the street, but at least by people within the industry. The Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Emmys all offer awards for composers.
There's also the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, who gives out yearly awards to the top film, TV, and video game composers.
