The keyword here is freedom. Unlike some fields of study, where your career path is determined the instant you step into a classroom, your options are wide open as an African-American studies major. You're not one of those taxidermy students who attended one "How To Make Animal Eyes Follow People Around The Room" session and ended locked into taxidermy until the end of time. Although, we will admit that taxidermy has created some very awesome things.

No, you have a versatile degree. There's a lot of value there, but it's up to you to find it. You're unlikely to be making a ton of cash, well, ever. Luckily, you can use your African-American studies major as a springboard. Keep it in your back pocket as concrete evidence as to why you should be working specific projects at your job, or use it to add a social justice component to another degree.

Just remember, with great power comes great responsibility. We read that on a bumper sticker once.

The African-American studies major serves as a sometimes brutal introduction to the forces behind systemic oppression, its roots, and, unfortunately, its ongoing effects. All you have to bring to the party is a passion for the multitude of stories that inform the African-American experience. What you do with that passion afterward is up to you, but we're betting you'll pick up some ideas along the way. If you don't, well, there's always the rodeo.
