General quality of life statement

Ask anyone what they want to get out of their career. The answers are going to be all over the place. There will always be that one guy who says "a rideable dinosaur" for no reason, but you're usually going to get a couple of standard answers.

Money is one. It's hard to find fault with it, since that's how our culture works. Money can be exchanged for goods, services, and dinosaurs. The median pay for an environmental engineer is high enough to get you rolling in that stuff.

Making a difference is the answer you get from people who didn't blurt out "money." It's hard to think of a career that could make more of a difference. Clean drinking water? Not dying of typhoid? Not having to battle rats daily in a Thunderdome? All of these vastly improve our quality of life, and it's your job to do just that. "Hey, you weren't poisoned today." That's a good difference to make.

Being happy is the answer you're going to get from anyone you ask who doesn't wear shoes very often. It's a perfectly fine answer, too. Happiness is a good thing, no matter what Batman thinks. More than half of environmental engineers are happy with their work, and that's pretty high.

You're hitting all three of the big ones. If this kind of work sounds interesting and fulfilling, go for it. Solve the world's problems with a smile on your face atop the back of that majestic allosaurus. Yes, we knew it was you.
