Assortment Strategy

Categories: Company Management

Walk down the aisles of a supermarket or a big box store. Everything you see has been placed there with the utmost care and scientific precision (well, Jimmy the teenaged stock clerk probably tossed stuff casually on the shelf with one hand while texting with the other...but the items were organized with the utmost care and scientific precision).

The assortment strategy is the way the items on the shelves are arranged. The goal is to get people to buy more stuff.

Think of the way the checkout line has several rows of candy and gum. It's not a conspiracy to ruin your diet. Well, it sort of is, but it's not a conspiracy directed at you. Research has shown that people will grab those little impulse buys on the way out, so the store puts that stuff there because it represents the best place to entice you...an excellent assortment strategy, if you ask us.
