Commercial Health Insurance

Categories: Insurance

There are basically two ways health insurance gets administered. There's public...and there's private.

To put it another way, health insurance can come through a government program, or it can get purchased in the open market. The open market kind is also called commercial health insurance.

You can buy commercial health insurance from for-profit entities, i.e. your typical insurance providers. You can also get it through non-profit sources. It might come as a benefit through your employer, or you might purchase it individually. The key distinction is that the coverage isn't administered through government programs, like Medicare or Medicaid.

Even in situations where your primary coverage comes through the government, you might still buy a supplemental commercial policy. This might provide enhanced services or cover items left out of the government policy.
