Gross National Happiness - GNH

Maybe he had a near-death experience, maybe not, but at some point, someone asked himself, “why are we only measuring things like GDP and GNP? Does economic growth necessarily correlate with happiness?” And thus, Gross National Happiness (GNH) was born.

Okay, actually...it was born via Bhutan’s fourth Dragon King (no joke).

Gross National Happiness is a measurement of the happiness of a nation’s people. As groups around the world were magnetized to this idea of making happiness a macro-scale goal, GNH gained more traction. Even the UN now has happiness on their global agenda.

GNH measures nine main factors: psychological well-being, material well-being, good governance, health, education, community vitality, cultural diversity and resilience, balanced time use, and ecological diversity. So yeah, GNH is much more than a poll of “how you feeling today?” GNH goes much deeper and wider, assessing institutions, nature, and the public life of a nation.
