Job Involvement

The mental link between a person and his-or-her job. It’s not necessarily a Charles Xavier-type telepathic link, but that internal feeling of self-worth with workplace performance.

When we have a high level of job involvement, we care about what other people think of the job we’re doing…and not in a needy, high maintenance way. It just means that we feel better about ourselves when others think that what we do is worthwhile. There’s nothing wrong with that. Most of us like recognition. Maybe not a trophy-and-pizza-party type of recognition, but that email from a higher-up saying “Good job...I always know I can depend on you.”

Side note: job involvement, along with psychological empowerment, are important factors in increasing job performance and reducing absenteeism and turnover.
