Mobile First Strategy

Categories: Company Management

Anyone out there remember life before smartphones? Yeah, we don’t really either, though it existed, we’re sure of it. But more and more, we can pretty much manage every facet of our lives—banking, shopping, fitness tracking, stalking our ex, ordering pizza, finding a nanny—via our phone, and tech companies are highly aware of this. In fact, a lot of times, they’ll design programs and program features for phones first, and then they’ll modify them for use on laptops and desktops. This is what’s known as a “mobile first strategy,” and...it kinda makes sense.

Think about it: how often do we actually log into Facebook or Instagram on a desktop computer? When’s the last time we used our laptop as a GPS device, or carried it around to help us count calories? Designing products for the devices we use most is just good business, since a lot more people are likely to utilize them on phones and tablets than on that dusty old desktop taking up space in the spare bedroom.
