The MS is "Morgan Stanley," and the "C" is "Capital," as in Capital Research, fund advisor to the American Funds mutual fund group. And yeah, the "I" there is "index."

The series of indices was created to track how well or poorly various funds were doing in these relatively arcane categories, as the mutual fund industry grew up and out and granularly global. See: Benchmark.
