Asymptote. Remember that thing from algebra? A curvy line that approaches a straight one endlessly, but never touches. Sort of like young teen love in a conservative family. Touching that line would be perfect. But you never get perfect. You only get better.

That's what optimizing is all about, and companies iterate myriad details trying to make each little process a percent or two better again and again (and again), hoping to compete better with their marketplace.
