Wedding Presents Floater

For those of us who watch too many crime dramas, the word “floater” probably conjures up images of dead people floating in the water, and we’re probably thinking to ourselves, “Wow, what a terrible wedding present.” And while we would be correct that a corpse in the pool is probably a really bad gift idea, that’s not at all what a wedding presents floater is. Thank goodness.
A wedding presents floater is a short-term insurance policy we can take out that protects our wedding gifts until they arrive at our house. So if Aunt Mavis in Tallahassee buys us the toaster of our dreams as a wedding present, but then it gets damaged by the shipping company while en route to our house in Omaha, our wedding presents floater would cover the damage.
Two things to note. First, this coverage won’t cover everything. If Aunt Mavis decides to scrap the toaster idea and ship us a Lamborghini instead, the Lambo might not be covered. Cash gifts usually aren’t covered either. And second, this coverage stops once the gift is inside our house, since our renter’s or homeowner’s insurance would kick in at that point. These policies are super short-term—90 days is the average—but if we’re tying the knot and know we’ll have a lot of gifts coming our way, it might be worth looking into.
