Source: The Wizard of Oz

Speaker: Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland)

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.

Context

People mistakenly think this line is spoken by Dorothy Gale, played by Judy Garland, in the film The Wizard of Oz, directed by Victor Fleming et al. (1939).

Maybe a bunch of people in the 1940s got sucked up by a tornado and bumped their heads, but instead of dreaming about a visit to Oz, they dreamed Dorothy said, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore." What Dorothy actually says is, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Poor Toto's been dropped out of the quote. Don't forget the little dog, too.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this when someone with a bad memory (tornado-related injury or not) finds themselves in unfamiliar surroundings.

Basically everyone gets this wrong, from Carrie Bradshaw to Rory Gilmore, and for good measure, both Olsen twins. In fact, we've got over five minutes of misquoting in a single video.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You've captured the spirit of the quote, but you didn't quite get it right. It's like confusing a tornado for a cyclone.
