Source: "In Da Club"

Speaker: 50 Cent

"Go, shawty. It's your birthday."

Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, shawty. It's your birthday.

Context

This line is from the song "In Da Club" by 50 Cent, from the album Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003).

50 Cent probably felt like it was his birthday when his debut single hit #1 on the Billboard charts. Produced by hip hop royalty Dr. Dre, this track announced 50 Cent as a major new player on the scene. If his career ever takes a nosedive, we think he ought to consider licensing this song to chain restaurants everywhere as their birthday song. For real, listen to this track and tell us it wouldn't be better than whatever they sing at Applebee's.

Where you've heard it

If you haven't ever heard 50 Cent's version (which is doubtful), maybe you've heard Beyoncé's. You might've also seen the Vitamin Water commercial that features the song and 50 himself, who is conducting an orchestra. Here it is. Fun fact: 50 was an early investor in Vitamin Water and made a bundle when it was sold to Coca Cola. That's baller, y'all.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

You won't sound pretentious if you break this out at a party, but you will sound like you're about a decade behind in your hip-hop literacy.
