Source: The IT Crowd

Speaker: Roy Trenneman

Hello. IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Context

This line is spoken by Roy Trenneman (played by Chris O'Dowd) in various episodes of The IT Crowd (2006-2010).

With his Irish brogue and complete inability to do any work or offer any tech support, Roy Trenneman is kind of living the employment dream. Except for the fact that he and his IT mates work in a dingy basement where fires spontaneously start.

As part of his mission to do as little work as possible, Roy has put the go-to line of IT professionals around the universe on tape. So he can sit back, relax, and listen to his clients treat each new iteration of "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" like it's the first time they've ever heard it.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this quote when your computer is on the fritz, and the tech support person decided to not be helpful that day. This advice does occasionally works though.

And if you're an IT person yourself and tired of telling customers this, you can wear this handy T-shirt.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote is a surefire way to way to out a tech know-it-all. Or maybe they're just a big fan of The IT Crowd. Hopefully it's the second thing.
