Speaker: Prison Girls

"If you'd have been there, if you'd have seen it, I betcha you would have done the same!"

He had it coming, he had it coming
He only had himself to blame!
If you'd have been there, if you'd have seen it
I betcha you would have done the same!

Context

This line was sung by the prison girls in the song "Cell Block Tango," written by Fred Ebb, from the musical Chicago (1975).

"Cell Block Tango" is the ultimate bad-girls song. (Sorry, M.I.A.) We know from Orange Is the New Black that you're not supposed to tell your fellow inmates why you're in prison, but the ladies of this all-female prison in Prohibition-era Chicago spill all in this high-stepping musical number.

And their reasons for killing various men are darkly humorous, from finding out a supposedly single guy is really a Mormon with six wives to a boyfriend chewing gum too loudly. The one similarity all these murderesses have is that the men all had it coming.

Apparently as long as there's a reason, it's okay to kill someone, especially if it's a cheating husband or boyfriend. This is the twisted code of the women of "Cell Block Tango." They won't be guest lecturing in your ethics class any time soon.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this song while watching Glee or the 2002 movie version of Chicago starring Catherine Zeta-Jones. You've possibly used this line yourself when trying to justify doing something just a tiny bit unethical.

Former American Idol contestant and YouTube sensation Todrick Hall wrote and sang a parody version of "Cell Block Tango" featuring Disney villains called "Spell Block Tango." You'll never see Cruella de Vil or Ursula in the same way after listening to this song.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

As long as you're not trying to justify doing something really illegal, quote this fun musical line all you want.
