Source: The Fear

Speaker: Lily Allen

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore.

Context

This line is from the song "The Fear" by Lily Allen from her album It's Not Me, It's You (2009).

Seems like everyone has an opinion about what "The Fear" means. No denying that it's a scary culture we live in today. And sarcastic Lily, never the wallflower, takes aim at what's wrong with it—celebrity worship, greed, youth obsession, information overkill, and rabid consumerism—all in a four-minute pop song.

But the music video sums it up nicely for most of us. In it, Lily plays a kind of Alice in a lost Wonderland world with too many mixed messages, morals and media. So, when she sings the line, "I don't know what's right and what's real anymore," we get it, because that's the culture we've created.

Maybe we should all go back to the time before cell phones, social media, and reality shows…as in Wayne's World circa 1990.

Life sure seemed a lot less complicated jamming on guitars and playing Super Nintendo in our parents' basements.

Where you've heard it

Have a friend looking at colleges? They may have screamed this line in total frustration at making a decision.

Oh, and let's not forget your last multiple choice test, you most likely thought, "Huh? What's right, what's wrong?" It pays to study, young grasshopper.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Nothing wrong with being a deep thinker like Lily.
