"I love you only because it's you the one I love"

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Context

This is from the poem "I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You," by Pablo Neruda.

In this poem, Neruda seems to be exploring the paradoxical nature of love. He's in love with his lover and that's the end of it. There's really no reason why he loves her. In fact, sometimes he really gets annoyed with her, but his heart always comes back to love. In the end, there's just no rhyme or reason. He's loves her, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Where you've heard it

Anyone who's hopelessly in love only has to scribble these words on some notebook paper and pass them to his crush and he's in.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Loving the one you love isn't pretentious at all!
