Speaker: Hud Bannon

I'll remember you, honey. You're the one that got away.

Context

This line is spoken by Hud Bannon (played by Paul Newman) in the film Hud, directed by Martin Ritt (1963).

Today, Newman means salad dressing, organic salsa, and popcorn. But in 1963, Newman meant "Action!" according to the poster for his hit movie Hud, a movie in which his character, Hud Bannon, performs such a terrible action that you might never eat a bowl of Butter Boom again.

Hud Bannon is rebellious, selfish, disrespectful, and irresponsible—i.e., the perfect American hero. At one point, Hud gets drunk and almost rapes Alma, the housekeeper. She soon quits her job, and as she's getting on the bus, Hud asks her if their "little ruckus" ran her off. Real sensitive guy, huh?

Alma confesses that, if Hud hadn't tried to rape her, she might have had sex with him anyway, because he looks so darn good with his shirt off. (On that matter, we have to agree.) In response to this, Hud tells her, "I'll remember you, honey. You're the one that got away." We hope no one actually finds this romantic.

Where you've heard it

Hopefully, Shmoopers, you'll never hear this cheesy one-liner that was uttered by an attempted rapist.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If you're looking to turn sexual assault into romance (something you should never, ever do), this is the perfect quote for you, ya jerkface.
